Method One - Symbol #5

Method One – Symbol #5
Jack Smith

Auxiliary’s Symbol series returns with 4 choice cuts from America’s Jason Leder, aka Method One. Those familiar with the producer will know the strength of quality in his work with ambience and atmosphere – casting an eye particularly at his recent release on Absys, ‘Hidden Houses,’ and his unreleased collaboration with Stunna ‘Coda,’ forthcoming on Paradox’s Outsider. Now famed for its diversity and experimentalism, Auxiliary has given him the opportunity to delve deeper into these sounds by stripping back unnecessary percussive elements, leaving a release with genuine substance and longevity.

#5.1 is classic Auxiliary, with its shimmering keys and Good Looking atmosphere, reworking the instantly recognisable riff from DJ Grand Wizard Theodore’s “Subway Theme” for 170 with aplomb. #5.2 is the stripped back calm before the storm, introducing a more menacing, incessant undercurrent that takes influence from the neo-industrial soundscapes of Bladerunner & Akira. #5.3 is blissful ambience, remoulding 5.1’s ethereal keys and scattered drum taps coupled with soaring strings and echoes of guitar licks to create a rare piece of musical quality. #5.4 rounds off the EP as 5.3’s reflective and brooding sister, a fitting finale to an altogether emotionally charged and sublimely produced oeuvre of work.

Symbol 5 is a strong look for minimal, not only showcasing Method One’s musical talent and versatility but also ASC’s ever-expanding empire of consistently remarkable releases, as both a label-owner and producer. It’s this consistency that has placed him firmly at the top of the pile as one of drum and bass’ premier taste-makers.
