Premiere: Unknown - A2 [MASK]
In a world where online visibility is not only omnipresent but borderline compulsive, it takes conviction and belief in one’s own musical ability to follow the path of anonymity. One such label forging a presence based on the strength of their music alone is the mysterious Berlin-based imprint MASK, who follow up last year’s impressive debut with a 200-piece vinyl-only EP entitled Noah.
Like its predecessor, Noah has been recorded in one take with a selection of analogue gear (for the trainspotters amongst you, that’s an EMU SP 1200, Mutual Instruments Ambika, Nord Rack, Octatrack and a Vermona Action Filter 4 amongst others). Each of its four tracks presents a shift in tone from the next whilst remaining firmly within the hybrid realm of the peculiarly functional. Here we draw attention to the A2 specifically, whose innocuous opening is soon washed over with a dominating wall of sub-bass – creating a twilight zone where patience meets agitation.
MSK02 lands on 23rd March 2018 in all good record stores.
