The Urban Essence Show w/ Ostinato Records (September 2017)

The Urban Essence Show w/ Ostinato Records (September 2017)
Adam Tiran

In this extra special show, we welcomed to the studio the team behind Ostinato Records, an imprint fast making a name for itself as premier excavators of music from Africa and the diaspora.

Their latest release, ‘Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes From The Horn of Africa’ is a fascinating celebration of Mogadishu in the ’70s and ’80s and has already gained wide-spanning critical acclaim.

We were joined by founder Vik Sohonie, his co-compiler on this record Nicholas Sheikholeslami and photographer Janto Djassi, for an engrossing chat through the label’s illustrious yet relatively short history to date, the struggles of repress culture in the digital age, and what’s next on the horizon. All that plus new music from Pappy Kojo, Special Request and Accelera.
