Five Essentials: Woz

Five Essentials: Woz
Alex Rennie

Seems we’re on a bit of a South Westerly tip right now. On the back of our Five Essentials with Marcel Lune, we’ve got another Bristol boy in Ashley “Woz” Westlake laying down a fresh quintet of sonic fancies. Woz’s rep as the fresh prince of the UK bass music scene is pretty much on point, especially when you take a look at the arsenal of explosive tunes he’s packing. After blasting his way onto the scene four years back with a high-octane remix of RackNRuin’s Territory, Woz was immediately snapped up by London town’s multi-award winning label Black Butter Records.

Since then, Woz has been sculpting out his own trademark style that has won him acclaim from heads such as Toddla T, Loefah and Gorgon City, to list a few. To give you a feel for a Woz production, start with an intimidating dose of synth, throw in a good measure of crisp percussion and polish it off with flares of bass that could quite possibly induce a cardiac arrest. Cherry Hill, his latest release, is a solid example of this rampant concoction of sounds; an atmospheric urban aesthetic that bleeds swagger from the get go. This is bass music that you need to step to; it will undoubtedly get craniums bouncing and limbs twisting. Woz will be mixing it up to a home crowd at Love Saves the Day this weekend, so before he destroys the crowd there let’s get stuck into his rhythmic picks.

Woz x Chubba – HBK
‘’ This is one i made a while back with super don and good mate Chubba. It’s recently been put up for free download so please allow this shameless plug haha.”

Maan – Burn
‘’Super sick tool from last year that I’m still playing in most sets. Cowbells, repeating piano stabs and a banging groove.. all boxes ticked!’’

Bicep – Just
‘’ The most recent track from one of my favourite artists. Every Bicep track has a vivd authentic rave aesthetic that i instantly connect with. Whether it’s on a garage , electro or 4×4 beat that vibe is always there and i love that.”

Last Magpie – Pledge
‘’ It’s hurts me to admit that i massively slept on this tune. I only found it a couple of months ago and can’t imagine it leaving my sets for a long time.”

Zed Bias – Couch Life
‘’ Overly stripped back, droning, 808 vibaa from Boss Zed Bias. Been dong the rounds for a while and just came out on 81!”

Love Saves The Day takes place this weekend in Eastville Park, Bristol. Full lineup here.
