Five Essentials: Krywald & Farrer | Percolate

Five Essentials: Krywald & Farrer
John Donovan

Next up in our Five Essentials series are London mainstays Krywald & Farrer. Long-time residents of inimitable party collective Percolate, their most recent outing ‘The People’s Asafo’ was released to wide acclaim on Rob Da Bank’s Silver Bear Recordings. Just as at ease warming up for Gilles Peterson as they are for Gerd Janson, the pair draw influence from right across the board – from disco to funk to Ghanian rhythms – and their selections here demonstrate eclecticism, maturity and a real refined ear.

African Brothers Band – Ngyegye No So

Ghana has produced some incredible music over the years and this is one our favourites. Every time you listen it puts a smile on your face and makes your shoulders shake. A sublime track throughout, the highlight for us being the guitar solo towards the end. Long live funky afro-beat!

Greg Henderson – Dreamin’

Released in 1982 this great disco track from Greg Henderson is a sure fire party starter. Just as appropriate for the clubs as it is for those summer day parties and festivals. Disco at its best.

Damu The Fudgemonk – Leo The Gemini

Damu The Fundgemunk is, in our eyes, one of the finest hip-hop instrumentalists out there. There are so many tracks of his which are worthy of mention but ‘Leo the Gemini’ is one that perfectly encapsulates his laid-back style. Great for winding down at those after after parties.

Little Junior Parker – Don’t Throw Your Love On Me So Strong

There aren’t many genres we can think of that exude as much emotion and musical expression as Blues music does. Little Junior Parker sings with such feel and purpose that you can’t help but be totally engaged.

Larry Heard – Guidance

Larry Heard is a hero. He takes the house sound deep the way it should be done, taking you on a 10-minute journey which is engaging from start to finish. This song is so special. Not many can compete with this guy – a true originator.

Krywald & Farrer will play alongside Andrés, K15, Marquis Hawkes and more for Percolate’s third birthday at Corsica Studios this Friday. Tickets – http://www.residentadvisor.net/event.aspx?720231
