FIVE ESSENTIALS: Phobia [Chroma]
As one third of trailblazing new trio Chroma, Phobia has been a figurehead of the rolling, ‘depth excess’ minimal associated with Renegade Hardware, Ingredients et al since his first release in 2001. We caught up with the producer who gave us his Five Essentials following on from Chroma’s weighty release on Total Science‘s CIA.
Probably the first record that made me sit up and wonder how this type of music was put together after seeing them on an old BBC program called Dance Energy in the early 90s. Definitely ignited my interest for DJing and eventually production.

This track was on pretty much every mix tape I had when I was younger, the contrast between the pads and piano in the intro and the switch with the amens and 808 bass just blew my mind at the time.

Clipse have to be one of the most underrated hip hop acts of recent times. ‘Grindin’ is from their first LP ‘Lord Willin’ – produced by The Neptunes, probably their finest moment in my opinion. A reminder that less is definitely more.

I first heard this on Fabio’s show on Radio One and was just amazed with the simplicity of it and the amount of soul it had in it at a time when everyone was putting out quite dark music. Still to this day I don’t think anyone puts together a groove quite like Calibre.

I could have picked one of about 20 tracks from Jamie Lidell, he’s an absolute genius. Amazing singer, song writer / producer signed to Warp a really inspiring guy to listen to.
