UE.40: Joe Cleen
Stepping up for our two-score mix we have an hour of disco permutations from mysterious producer Joe Cleen.
He’s the newest recruit to the sensationally named Jazz Cabbage, a vinyl-only dancefloor-friendly imprint set up by Bordeaux’s Strip Steve – whose own production credits span Waxtefacts and the ever on-point Royal Oak.
The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread EP is the third release on the label in half a year, and as far as we can see, it’s also Joe’s debut – offering up two composed slices of piano house. On the A-side, ‘Care While It Lasts’ is an immaculate piece of peak-time staccato keys mania, backed up by a woozy broken beat remix by labelmate YGT (aka Your Gay Thoughts – another equally sublime moniker); while on the flip ‘Pink’ traverses jazzier territories with a lovingly looped sample from the era of Duke Ellington, alongside a teasingly tight interpretation from Strip Steve.
Nestle in as Joe drifts through disco edits ranging from the lofty to the wonky, shades of purple and crunchy acid – all tinged with a glorious ’80s hue.
The Best Thing Since Sliced Bread EP is out now.
