UE.17: Franklin De Costa

UE.17: Franklin De Costa
Jack Smith

Following on from his debut on Killekill back in January, enigmatic Berlin native Franklin De Costa touches down at fabric this weekend as he headlines Vitalik Recordings‘ Room 3 takeover: another frankly stellar Saturday lineup at the London super-club.

His collaborative EP with DJ Spider Genetically Modified Tracks saw Franklin embrace the darker side to his production approach, a harsh sound not without the occasional glimpse of warmth – a versatility that the intimacy of fabric’s upper level can only exacerbate on the night.

We caught up with the producer for a quick chat and an exclusive mix of peak-time glitchy minimal and driving tech-house ahead of his show.

Greetings Franklin! How’s life treating you right about now?
Pretty good. Very interesting turns lately.

You’re playing Fabric this May, how does your mix here mirror the style in which you tend to play out? Can we expect something similar from your set at the club?
Well i like diversity in my sets. Also depends where i play and what mood i´m in. So sure i´ll play a view tunes from the mix.

Which track from the mix is your current ‘go-to’ tune? What effect on the crowd do you look for when dropping that?
The track from the Brothers label gets played out a lot and i love the new Gesloten Cirkel album. I dont expect  the crowd to scream all the time for every little bassdrop. That´s not the kind of music i play.

How is 2014 looking for you so far? New releases on the horizon?
This year started pretty busy and i´ve been to a lot new places. Also upgraded my studio and i am pretty happy about my music at the moment. I´m working on a new ep for Killekill, a new 10″ as Mudkid is ready for Greta Cottage Workshop. And there are some other projects under different names to be finished.

And finally, what’s the one Urban Essential you couldn’t live without?
Good supermarkets around the corner as i like to cook a lot and have a small fridge.
