UE.36: Microfunk Crew b2b Nuage & Dissident

Microfunk Crew, Nuage, Dissident
Jack Smith

With numerous early reviews around the sound, an official Space Cadets playlist, and a Five Steps with flag-bearer Bop back in 2014, it’s fair to say that we at Urban Essence have a bit of a soft spot for all things Microfunk. What’s not to like? Ageless, forward-thinking, genre-defying… in our humble opinion, it’s all of the above and then some.

Speaking with the Microfunk Crew in 2016, we were delighted to hear of a rather tasty morsel of sonic exploration brewing – a four-way throw-down, if you will – that goes a little something like Bop b2b Oak b2b Nuage b2b Dissident, in glorious podcast form. So here it is! An absolute beauty of a mix from four of the finest exponents of experimental electronic in the game today. Get it while it’s hot, Crew.

And if that wasn’t enough, we caught up with Mr Microfunk himself Bop for a quick look into the future of the sound in 2016.

Who makes up the Microfunk Crew these days?

Microfunk Crew these days – Bop and Oak.

Tell us about the new label you’ve launched…

Microfunk Music is a platform for minimalistic and deep electronic music at 170bpm. The purpose of the label is to capture and develop this minimal and experimental approach to dnb that I and microfunk artists truly believe in, and make it part of its history.

How did you approach the mix?

We had fun, tried different mixing methods and ideas and played our favourite tunes of recent times.

What’s on the horizon for you guys?

More music! We just released a dub techno remix by a great artist called Grad_U on our sublabel Microfunk Extended (for non-dnb stuff). This spring we plan to release a Various Artists LP on cassette with tunes that haven’t had a release until now – a very interesting project in my opinion. And after that we will release another VA EP on coloured vinyl. So yeah, make sure you subscribe on our YouTube and Soundcloud to get all the previews and info in time.

Thank you very much for having us. Big up Urban Essence and all the listeners, hope you enjoy the mix!
